The government has responded to the resignation of the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (ZISCO) interim Chairman Professor Gift Mugano, with the Industry and Commerce Minister Sekai Nzenza stating that the new person for the post will be announced in due coarse.
Mugano, who was absent from Nzenza’s inaugural meeting with the new ZISCO Steelo Board members and CVhief Executive Officer on Monday resigned after a Twitter handle attributed to the board leader made comments on the government weekend-long decision to suspend mobile transfers.
Chairman’s resignation letter indicated friction between government officials and Mugano over comments made on the public media were viewed by “some sections of government as in direct conflict” with the role of a board member of a state enterprise.
A Twitter handle attributed to Mugano had earlier on criticised the government decision to suspend mobile money transactions on allegations of promoting illicit activities on the parallel market.
A statement from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce says the Minister thanked Mugano for the contribution made to ZISCO Steel.
“Dr Sekai Nzenza noted the absence of Dr Muganu, who was the Transitional Acting Chairperson of ZISCO Steel Board. Prior to pursuing his academic career, Dr Mugano was an officer in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce,” the press statement says.
“As the Transitional Acting Board Chair of ZISCO Steel, Dr Muganu made a valuable contribution to the strategic direction of the steel company.”
“The ZISCO Board is now validly constituted with a mature, diverse, and competent team of experienced professionals who individually expressed their strong desire to lead the revival of ZISCO utilizing new technologies.”
