The initiative commemorated what the anti-apartheid activist and co-founder of Black Consciousness, Steve Biko achieved. Not many South Africans feature as doodle on Google but Biko joins the few , the writer, novelist and political activist Nadine Gordimer and Nelson Mandela.

Biko fought for ‘Black is Beautiful’ and spread the message across South Africa at the height of apartheid in the 1960s and 70s. Along with this, he was a co-founder of the Black Consciousness movement, which denounced apartheid policies and encouraged black people to talk pride in their racial identities and cultural heritages.

Google quote ‘Black Consciousness is an attitude of the mind and a way of life the most positive call to emanate from the black world for a long time’.
