The (NBC), an acronym for the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission has with immediate effect (well a couple of days ago) legally prohibited some major hits by well-known Naija artists 9ice, Olamide and Davido. The NBC, after some reviews and reflection, found said music very dirty and rather too insolent to broadcast despite its ability to make so many joints and clubs around Africa rock – wow, go figure!
The announcement was made on the 22nd of August 2017. According to sources (#ThisDay) the broadcasting commission stated songs like Olamide’s ‘Wo’ and ‘Wavy Level’, Davido’s ‘Fall’ and ‘If (Remix)’, and 9ice’s ‘Living Things’ should never be aired or shown on Nigerian soil.
‘Wo’ by Olamide has been seen as a rebellious anthem againist the country’s Tobacco act (which I still do not understand …not saying Tobacco is good but..it is…Tobacco afterall??)
“This is our position: the video contravenes the Act. Innocently or otherwise, Tobacco promotion advertising sponsorship is banned in all forms,”
The Commission stated.
We are all still trying to wrap our heads around this whole situation. It is still not clear why Davido and 9ice’s tracks have been banned too but it has happened. Perhaps it’s about respecting the Nigerian Health Acts, maybe the Bananas on ‘Fall’? Who knows?!
The regulatory Service of Nigeria have been having problems with Olamide’s tracks since 2016 with ‘Shakiti Bobo’ and another track being banned back then due to profanity.
