Government, this week, set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee to work closely with the Power Department as energy becomes a challenge in the country.
Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told journalists in Harare after a cabinet meeting that the Inter-Ministerial Committee will work closely with the Energy Ministry in order to facilitate a collective approach in the resolution of the prevailing power and energy supply.
Zimbabwe, currently cannot  enough electricity for use due to low water levels at Kariba Dam, while other power stations have experienced breakdowns on archaic machinery.
Such challenges have resulted in Zimbabwe’s power company introducing 18 hours of blackouts which is affecting production in companies as well a individuals.
The Energy Ministry’s decision against power challenges has been to import electricity from outside the country.
Two countries, South Africa and Mozambique have been the main targets for such a decision.

“On the power front, it was reported that the Minister of Energy and Power Development is currently in South Africa for electricity supply negotiations with ESKOM,” Mutsvangwa said.
“The nation will be apprised of the outcome of the negotiations at an appropriate time.”

Besides electricity, the Energy Ministry is also facing fuel shortage that has resulted in long queues at service stations.

“Cabinet was briefed on the Fuel and Energy Supply Situation in the country by the Minster of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare as the Acting Minister of Energy and Power Development,” Mutsvangwa said.
“The Minister informed Cabinet that a total of 40 million litres of the combined fuel product is currently being pumped into the country.”
