Perfectionists are so caught up in ruling out anything less than perfect. If it is anything less than perfect, it is unacceptable! Even if they are right 90 percent of the time, that 10 percent of unsatisfactory outcomes stresses them.
Do you ever wonder why perfectionists are dissatisfied more often and prone to stress?
Well, according to Geoffrey F. Fisher “When you aim for perfection, you discover it’s a moving target.”
The word Perfection origin is centered on keeping people optimistic. Perfection is a motivator in goal setting to make the outcome slightly less than or more like perfect. Perfection should just be a goal whilst excellence is tolerated and practiced. As a famous quote reads “aim for the sun if you miss you’ll land on the stars,”.
Generally speaking, perfectionists are difficult to work with, whether as supervisors or subordinates. Unquestionably, they believe they are better than everyone else. For this purpose, their way is always the best way to do things.
Not only that but also delegating is alien based on the conception other people will not carry out the particular task in a satisfactory manner. In the long run, they complain due to cumbersome tasks and workloads for the simple reason of not wanting to delegate.
In the words of Philosopher Harriet Braiker “Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing.” It sums up the whole ocean surrounding the island of perfectionism right?
Striving for perfection is taking on what is not within your abilities. If you set unrealistic, high standards and overestimate your ability, you are setting yourself to fail. For the most part, the result is pure frustration, stress, and dissatisfaction, among other unfortunate consequences.
Moreso, from a human resource perspective, perfectionists in the workplace are ‘Naïve Realism.’ For the simple reason of the tendency of people believing they see reality as it really is, objectively and without bias. Alternatively, the reality is plain for all to see and that a rational person will agree with them.
If you don’t agree with them you are either uninformed, lazy, irrational, or biased. Have you ever met “control freaks” and difficult? This perceptual bias of naive realism might be the reason.
For the same reason ‘omniscient’ as a word must be used only in reference to God and God alone, so does the word Perfection. Michel Eyquem De Montaigne says “It is very easy to accuse a government of imperfection, for all mortal things are full of it.”
Remember as mortals imperfections are innate, it is those imperfections that make us who we are. Leave perfection to the immortals. Mind me I’m not saying slack or something but do what is logical and sensible.
“When you aim for perfection, you discover it’s a moving target.”- Yes, its true! Stop trying to be perfect. Its okay not to be perfect because there’s no perfect in the first place. Humans are imperfect. We should allow ourselves to be human. There is beauty in imperfections. Thanks for sharing!
