Before you think we’re about to bore/entertain you with Football stats, give us a sec. Today we highlight some African stars in the world’s favourite sport that have their side-hustle (and for some side-chick) game on POINT! Here are some sportsmen that have definitely put the hustle in side hustle.
Alex Iwobi
Despite the fact most footballers are known to prefer remaining within the profession even after retiring, these modern-day masters of the beautiful game are expanding their horizons and some while still playing. First on our list is Nigerian footballer, Alex Iwobi, Iwobi announced his move to Nollywood via a movie trailer for an action movie he is staring in. The move comes after Iwobi dabbled in modelling with the Super Eagles World Cup kit campaign showcasing his versatility.
Benni McCarthy
South African footballer, Benni McCarthy enjoyed success in the music industry in 1998 with his hit Shibobo. The song featured TKZee, sold over 100,000 copies in the first three weeks of release and made McCarthy sizeable profit. The song was such a hit it inspired a football talk show that is named after the song, Eshibobo.
Asamoah Gyan
Another footballer turned music star is Ghanaian striker, Asamoah Gyan who broke into the entertainment industry in 2010. Gyan collaborated with friend musician Castro on his first hit and has gone on to release more music that has earned many awards at the annual Ghana Music Awards. Gyan’s most recent song features Ghanaian dancehall artist, StoneBwoy titled Dirty Enemies.
Lehlohonolo Majoro
Also from South Africa has been looking to a less glamorous side-hustle but none the less is winning and making moves as a Forex trader. According to the Orlando Pirates striker,
“It has been two months ever since I started trading, so far so good…,” he wrote on his Instagram.
Stephan Appiah
A former captain of the Ghana national team, Stephen has been slaying on the fashion scene. Appiah has made brands for a number of entertainment characters in Ghana and eventually made his own fashion label, StepApp which has done very well.
John Obi Mikel
Last but not least, the Nigerian International footballer based in China launched a music label, MMM in 2013. The label came after the footballer expressed interest in the industry; Mikel communicated a desire to release music as well when he retires under the label.
Considering the short lifespan of a football career it’s good to see them tap into their creative sides. Proof that one can be as multi-dimensional as they choose. Now is not the end, you could still figure life after and find other passions. Sure it’d help if we all had six-figure salaries but let’s not lose focus!
The point is this brings African talent, adaptability and resilience to the fore!
