We might all be disappointed that the Warriors did not manage to bring back the silverware but there are some young intellectuals we can all rally behind. The whizkids of our high schools have been excelling in continental and international competitions. The 2016 DSTV Eutelsat Star Awards national competitions are done with and the cream has been selected to represent us in the international competition in Lagos Nigeria, on the 7th of February.

The competition has been hosted since 2011 by DSTV in conjunction a satellite company Eutelsat. It is aimed at encouraging students to take an interest in science and technology. There are two categories, essays and the poster design category which Zimbabwe mostly excels in. We have have had two students on the winner’s podium  Lesley Chakurira from Lomagundi College and Mallon Marume of Mutare Boys High. These were winners in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

This year Zimbabwe will be represented by Andile Dube of St Columba’s High School, Shaun Matondo of Hartzell High School, Brandon Murira of Mutare Boys High School and Ruvimbo Jongwe of St Dominic’s High School. Mutare Boys High seems to be coming in strong in the poster category with their former representative winning the Best overall Poster for the 2015 edition.

Liz Dziva, the publicity and public relations manager of Multichoice Zimbabwe said that she was delighted with the number of entries received for the year 2016. We sure hope that this competition will be a stepping stone for the new generation of African intellectuals. As always we rally behind the team from Zimbabwe, you should too, they will not ‘worry-us’!
