ZINARA Sets Aside $17 Billion for Road Rehabitation

Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has set a ZWL$ 17 billion under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program 2 (ERRP2).

The $17 billion is for disbursement to provinces and major cities to attend road works that need urgent attention.

“Our projection is to start the disbursements possibly mid-March when we anticipate that the rains would have subsided,” ZINARA Board Chairman George Manyaya said.

“The allocations comprise disbursements made directly to rural and urban councils for works done through the Department of Roads and DDF.”

Last year ZINARA disbursed $9.5 billion to support Phase 1 and 2 of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program 2 across the country.

Manyaya revealed that no single Road Authority is owed what was allocated in 2021.

“The year 2021 was a highly successful year for ZINARA, inefficiently providing funding for the emergency road works necessitated by Cyclone Idai and the incessant rains received during the 2020-2021 farming season,” he said.

“It is not a secret that the current state of our roads is worrisome and resultantly as you may recall His Excellency the President Dr. E.D Mnangagwa in February 2021 declared all roads to be in a state of national disaster following the heavy rains that we received during the 2021-2021 rainy.”

The last time the government made such a decision was in early 2017 when former President Robert Mugabe declared a state of disaster on Harare’s roads and the related infrastructure through the Government Gazette.

Zimbabwe has 88,100 km of classified roads and 17,400 km of which are paved according to a report by the African Development Bank (AFDB)
