Young Powerlife Ministries International founder Prophet Isaac T Sawana has made a basic argument that prophets are not only beyond politicians but are also better than them.
The Powerman as many of his followers call him, laid out his theory on the relationship between the prophetic and political office in a colourful and attention-grabbing sermon delivered on 11th March, where he pleads with his congregants to pray for peace as the nation heads for a general election.
The prophet’s reasoning goes something like this, unlike politicians who are voted in by people, prophets are voted in by the higher power himself, God.
He said:
‘Prophets are not politicians. Prophets are beyond and better than politicians. Prophets are voted for by God and they can never be voted out by anybody else.’
Prophet Sawana added:
‘So as a prophet we see what is ahead and trust me, what is ahead is not gonna be easy. We want to pray for peace. We want to pray for peace in the upcoming Zimbabwean elections.
By what I see at the end is same same. What is here shall be there, that’s what God is saying about Zimbabwe.’
In his orison, Sawana interceded for the cancellation the spirit of bloodshed, that they may be peaceful and harmonized elections, and that God’s will be done.
It is such a bold claim that the Prophet has made, but some people might want to argue that with some of the recent scandals and questionable practices that have been involving the new age Prophets, it is somehow dubious to assert that all Prophets are actually better and beyond Politicians.
Regardless, the call has been made and whatever position one takes on civil disobedience, it seems that prophets are still called to take imaginative and provocative action, not for the sake of sensationalism, but to point towards truth and justice. Biblical prophets risked their dignity, social acceptance and even their lives to proclaim and perform messages from God. Their witness should continue to inspire Christians today, as Prophet Sawana is doing in this case.
