As Seen On Insta : Dig into the #AfroSurrealism of @VFXTshego
When I first clicked follow to @VFXTshego whose government name is Tshegofatso Motswagwe, his profile stood out, so much I switched on my notifications. What on earth would he juxtapose next, whose molten face onto what texture, what street would his photography project? Yeah, sure it was Afrofuturistic but it had this galactic surrealist allure to it, whether it was Pearl Thusi’s Scorpion King, Warrior Princess character in a gold dust desert with pyramid spaceships or a galactic depiction of an Egyptian queen with mystical glowing, metallic eyes. There is something satisfying about seeing relateable yet unrealistic elements visualised.
Tshego is a 20-year-old self-taught Graphic Designer, Video Editor, Film & Animator based in Pretoria, South Africa. In line with his Creative ambitions, he works for a local visual company as Cameraman and Editor but as a contrast is a business student.
“Even though I have a massive artistic side, I’m a student at Boston Business College, studying Systems Development,” said Tshego
Perusing his visuals they remind me of accounts like @artxman and @slimesunday,
“I’m inspired by those type of accounts and more but all my work has it’s own have my own touch of aesthetic and film feel,” explained Tshego.
Tshego’s creations are strongly inspired by music and silence which he uses to get into the creative state of mind,
“I listen to various artists on Soundcloud and sometimes I get to an extent of not even playing music at all because the biggest challenge for me about the process is to project what I have in mind into the digital workspace,” he detailed.
A well-rounded creative, who can add beat-making to his list of in camera work, design and photography, Tshego does not have a favourite discipline but admits video editing is a secret inclination,
“I’m a Video Editor by heart so I won’t actually say I do have a favourite because at the end of the day it’s all about the hard work that was put in the beauty of the work,” concluded Tshego.
