Cabinet has resolved that all rent deferrals shall be free of any interest charges or penalties of whatever nature as Zimbabwe continues under lockdown to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Information and Broadcasting Minister, Minister Monica Mutsvangwa briefing the press after today’s cabinet said that both residential and commercial properties must be afforded a moratorium on evictions in respect of applicable lease obligations due for the period from April to the end of the lockdown, including the payment of rentals due for those months.
The cabinet resolved that any unpaid rentals due for the period from April to end of the lockdown be paid in equal instalments after the declaration of the end of the lockdown period together with the rental payments due for those months.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is to consider the promulgation of Presidential Regulations to give relief to both tenants and landlords during the lockdown period according to the cabinet resolutions.
Mutsvangwa said homeowners or landlords are “obliged to make repayments on their properties or on any other property to which the rent deferrals apply shall be entitled, in respect of their mortgage obligations, to similar relief mutatis mutandis which will apply to tenants as set out in sub-paragraphs, above in respect of their mortgage obligations.”
The cabinet resolves to easy the situation on tenants with fears of how Zimbabweans are living during the current lockdown.
Majority of citizens in Zimbabwe are in the informal sector which have been living from hand to mouth.
