AFROPUNK Showcases Black People Defying Archaic Notions Through Its “Black People Do” Series

A new and riveting web series created by AFROPUNK dubbed “Black People Do” is showcasing Black people defying archaic notions of what we do for fun as we partake in every call for adventure imaginable in the great outdoors.

The series which premiered this week on YouTube tells the seldom seen or heard stories of Black adventurers around the world with boundless freedom and boldness while unravelling the myth of the single Black story.

“Black People Do will focus on Black athletes in area of sports that are thought to be unusual. We’ll explore their stories, experiences, challenges, and triumphs through their unique experiences as a Black athlete in spaces where whiteness is prioritised or over-represented,” reads the show synopsis.

The maiden episode features Zoie Brogdon, a young Black woman and equestrian athlete with a unique experience and vantage point in pursuit of her passion for riding. In it, she talks about the dedication, wins, and challenges that come with being an equestrian and the will it takes to excel within a sport dominated by the elite.

Described as an initiative that artistically promotes a progressive attitude towards creating positive change, AFROPUNK uses the arts to promote the deconstruction of oppressive ideologies that seek to categorise people and label them as ‘other’. It is defining culture by the collective creative actions of the individual and the group. It is a safe place, a blank space to freak out in, to construct a new reality, to live your life as you see fit while making sense of the world around you.
