At the End of the Barrel: Poem for Black Women

At the End of the Barrel: Poem for Black Women
Dark, As dark as the night sky One without the stars or moon to brighten it This pigment – I never chose It, rather, chose me Yet persecuted for it, I am Female, Fragile – like snowflakes So gentle – […]

Dark,
As dark as the night sky
One without the stars or moon to brighten it
This pigment – I never chose
It, rather, chose me
Yet persecuted for it, I am

Female,
Fragile – like snowflakes
So gentle – I am told
So glass ceilings were set
Forgetting that I bear more than they ever will,
that in that fragility and gentleness, great strength lies.

Young,
Inexperienced – maybe
But remember maturity is a state of mind
The number of decades one has seen
should never equate to stifling of another’s voice
All I need is a chance to be…

Young, dark and female.
