Within a relatively short space of time, the DJ Lake July Festival in Harare, Zimbabwe has become highly anticipated. With only a few days left to this year’s edition, we caught up with one of the organizers Christian Chogugudza. This year the festival will be happening on the eve of the much-awaited Zimbabwean elections and has been appropriately themed, ‘A unified festivity lets party together’. Naturally, we had a few questions…

What’s NEW this edition?

“It’s Bigger and Better! This year, the festival has more games and activities that have been introduced. There also more performing artists compared to the previous editions, 20 artists who are going to be performing with Jah Signal, Alexio, Killer-T and EX-Q being the main headline acts of the festival.”

What exactly are we celebrating?

ARTS! UNITY and US being Zimbabwean. We are celebrating our cultural diversities and the fun of being Zimbabwean We trying to put together different people with different backgrounds in one place. Our main focus this year is for people to set aside differences and come together in unison to celebrate life and cultural diversity at the lakeside.

Besides music, why else should we be at Lake July?

“Tourism! Before we talk of Victoria Falls, Kariba Dam and all those big tourist destinations in Zimbabwe, let’s start with the Lake Chivero, close to home. We want people to come and enjoy themselves, with their families on the shores of the Lake Chivero. We hope that this festivity will come as a refreshing experience for everyone. The event will bring Lake Chivero to life; it will put Lake Chivero in the spotlight as one of the country’s tourist destinations.”

What is the Future of this festival?

“The future is to grow the brand into becoming one of the most sought out festivals on the continent. As you have noted, there have only been a few festivals of this calibre in the country- where it can stretch for three years running and increasing in the number of attendees, expecting about 40 000 people. ultimately we’d like to go continental!”

The DJ Lake July Festival begins on the 27th to the 29th of July. Tickets are already on sale with the advance ordinary ticket going for $10, with the VIP ticket shooting for $30. Advance tickets are on sale at Chicken Slice outlets, Talk City(Joina City) and Total Service Station (Avondale and Samora Machel).
