Theatre or performing arts is great part of creative arts in the nation or Africa to say. It is making tremendous strides and Ngoma Yarira Theatre Ensemble takes pride to be one of them. We had a chance to catch up with Ernest Nyatanga, the founder and president of the theater . Here is what he had to say on the one on one encounter.
What is Ngoma Yorira Theatre and where can people find you?
Ngoma Yorira is a performing arts ensemble grouping all actors, dancers, singers, film directors and producers, scriptwriters, authors and models. We are in Parktown Waterfalls and started in November 2015.
What inspires your work?
Mostly real life stories of what is actually happening in the society. In a few cases, we have stories based on what happened to one of our members.
What message are you hoping to send through your work?
We are more involved with messaged like child marriages, domestic violence, human trafficking and children right. Actually, we are working on a six-episode street theatre production tackling the themes mentioned.
So how is your work evolving and how do you deal with competition?
So far, we have committed members and we do rehearsals in terms of the productions. Currently we have 50 members that include actors, scriptwriters, dancers, poets, models and technical team. Apart from these, there is a department of skits for adverts; we have a series of skits on our website. We are aiming at pitching various companies as paid adverts. In terms of competition, we are not afraid because our approach is unique and we have talent.
What are you working on to look out for and your achievements?
Now we are working on new works, two short films (Predicament and Fake Friends) and a theatre a series. In December 2016, we had a presentation of stage theatre at Simba Art Festival.
